Aspectos da reprodução e dinâmica populacional de Chione pubera (Bory Saint-Vicent) (Bivalvia, Veneridae) no sul do Brasil Zoologia
Borzone,Carlos Alberto; Vargas,Kelly Midori; Pezzuto,Paulo Ricardo; Tavares,Yara Aparecida Garcia.
Material collected with a 2-meter wide beam trawl during eight surveys conducted from December 1995 to February 1997 was used for a first preliminary description of the reproduction and population dynamics of the edible venerid bivalve Chione pubera (Bory Saint-Vicent, 1827). Greatest catches were found between 30 to 35 meters depth, on fine sandy bottoms with a mud content lower than 10%. Dry weight meat condition index showed highest values during autumn and lowest values from winter to summer months. Histological analysis of gonadal tissue showed a continuous reproduction, with peaks of maturation on autumn and spring, Spawning was related with the increase of water temperature, that occurs twice a year in the region as a consequence of a particular...

Clinostomum complanatum (Digenea, Clinostomidae) density in Rhamdia quelen (Siluriformes, Pimelodidae) from South Brazil BABT
Vianna,Rogério Tubino; Pereira Júnior,Joaber; Brandão,Deodoro Atlante.
The density of Clinostomum complanatum metacercariae by the body regions and among the size classes of Rhamdia quelen was compared. The host size classes were defined by cluster analysis, using weight and total length as attributes. These values were related with environmental characteristics and host biological data. In all the host size classes H and PeF, CF and PF, and P and AF regions pairs, showed similar density (tested by X² test). The hosts with 30-36 cm showed largest parasite density in all the regions, except in CAV. Fishes smaller than 11 cm did not show significant differences of parasite density in all body regions. In the other classes, H was the most infected region, followed by PeF. The results suggested that the environmental conditions...

Daily birth numbers in Passo Fundo, South Brazil, 1997-1999: trends and periodicities BJMBR
Mikulecky,M.; Lisboa,H.R.K..
Between October 6, 1997 and April 30, 1999, 5011 births (mean: 8.76 per day) were registered in the city of Passo Fundo, South Brazil. The sequence of 572 daily birth numbers was not random (iteration test). Neyman distribution (m = ¥) showed the best fit. Clusters of days with higher birth numbers alternated with days with low numbers of births. Periodogram analysis revealed a significant periodicity of 6.98 days. The cosinor regression, testing 10 a priori supposed period lengths, found significant seasonality peaking in August-September and significantly highest birth numbers on Thursdays. Among the lunar and solar rotation cycles, the tropic lunar cycle and its 4th harmonic were most pronounced, in agreement with results concerning natality in Germany...

Rui,Ana Maria; Fabián,Marta Elena; Menegheti,João Oldair.
A study has been made on the geographical distribution and comparative external and cranial morphological analysis of Artibeus lituratus Olfers, 1818 and Artibeus fimbriatus Gray, 1838 (Chiroptera, Phyllostomidae) in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. A. lituratus and A. fimbriatus were found to be sympatric in the state north to the "Planície Costeira", in the "Depressão Central", in the hillsides of "Serra Geral", and in the northern region of the state, areas previously covered by forests. The southernmost point for Artibeus Leach, 1821 distribution is 30º South, and A. lituratus and A. fimbriatus are the two species found more to the south. The two species studied do not show sexual dimorphism as to external characteristics. Cranial measurements...

Invertebrados cavernícolas da porção meridional da província espeleológica do Vale do Ribeira, sul do Brasil Zoologia
Pinto-da-Rocha,Ricardo.
From 1986 to 1992, I surveyed the invertebrate fauna of twelve limestone caves from South Ribeira Valley (State of Paraná, Brazil). Associated to walls in the entrace zone live Enoploctenus and Blechroscelis spiders, Goniosoma opilionids, Strinalia crickets, Latebraria amphipyroides moths, and Culicidae and Sciaridae dipterans. In aphotic zone, occur Plato spiders, Daguerreia inermis opilionids, Pseudonannolene strinatii diplopods, Smicridea caddisflies and the aquatic crustacean Aegla paulensis. I found in both zones Ctenus fasciatus spiders. Paronella collembolans, Zelurus travassosi heteropterans, Cholevidae and Anthribidae beetles, Phoridae dipterans and Braconidae wasps. One of the most important energy sources in these caves is the hematophagous bat...

Loricate Choanoflagellates from the South Atlantic coastal zone (~32 °S) including the description of Diplotheca tricyclica sp. nov. Biota Neotropica
Bergesch,Marli; Odebrecht,Clarisse; Moestrup,Øjvind.
The biodiversity of marine heterotrophic protists is poorly known in the South Atlantic coastal zone (~32 °S) especially regarding the nanoflagellates. The presence of loricate choanoflagellates was reported for the first time in the Patos Lagoon estuary and the adjacent coastal zone. Seventeen species of eleven genera of loricate choanoflagellates were observed between October 1998 and May 2000 in fixed water samples (lugol's solution + glutaraldehyde) in a JEM 100-SX transmission electron microscope. Most species were recorded in euhaline and mixopolyhaline waters during the spring and summer, none in autumn and a few (four) in winter. The absence of choanoflagellates at the more sheltered inshore stations is due freshwater influence, and at the beach...

Offshore distribution patterns of the cyanobacterium Trichodesmium erythraeum ehrenberg and associated phyto- and bacterioplankton in the southern Atlantic coast (Paraná, Brazil) BABT
Siqueira,Adriana; Kolm,Hedda Elisabeth; Brandini,Frederico Pereira.
Studies were carried out on Thrichodesmium erythraeum occurring on the inner shelf in the state of Paraná, Brazil. Temperature, salinity, rainfall, wind velocity, total bacteria, bacterial biomass, chlorophyll-a, phytoplankton, Anabaena sp., Merismopedia sp. and T. erythraeum densities were measured in surface water. Centric and pennate diatoms, Anabaena sp. and Merismopedia sp. were most abundant at 15 m isobath, while dinoflagellate abundance was relatively constant among stations. Similarly, total bacterial densities were relatively homogeneous throughout the sampling area, suggesting that blooms of T. erythraeum were not yet in the senescent phase. Results showed that T. erythraeum was capable of surviving in relatively inhospitable environmental...

Plankton community dynamics in a subtropical lagoonal system and related factors Anais da ABC (AABC)
DONADEL,LETÍCIA; CARDOSO,LUCIANA DE S.; TORGAN,LEZILDA C..
ABSTRACT Changes of the plankton community in a shallow, subtropical lagoonal system and its relation to environmental conditions were investigated during an annual cycle to provide information on its spatial and seasonal variation pattern. The study carried out at four sites (three in the Peixe lagoon and one in the Ruivo lagoon), which are located in the Lagoa do Peixe National Park, southern Brazil. The system has a temporary connection to the Atlantic Ocean by a narrow channel. The phytoplankton density was higher in the Peixe lagoon whereas the specific richness was higher in the Ruivo lagoon which is also a site with the lower salinity. The phytoplankton biomass near the channel showed seasonal variation with the highest value in fall and lowest in...
